This tutorial will give you an alternative method to colorising/toning an image. Textures, actions and various other ways can be used to change an image’s tone in a professional way however this method is using Adobe Photoshop, simply changing the image mode into duotone. It is the fastest method and the outcome is pretty impressive!
We will be using this image to show you how to achieve different tones in simple steps.

A simple (yet bold) black and white tone can be achieved by:
1. Firstly, open the image in adobe Photoshop.
2. Sharpen the image if necessary.
3. Then go to Image > Mode > Duotone

4. A window will appear, and from that choose Tritone (using three colours) or Quadtone (using four colours). Depending on the type of tone required, you will need to select either, however for this tutorial example choose “Tritone” as we will be creating the black and white version one.

5. Then select first colour, then the second, and the third as shown on the image below.
6. You can also use a texture and set it to “overlay” to darken the edges.
7. Then change the Image mode back to “Indexed colour” and save the image.
8. Here is the end result:
You can also experiment to achieve the tone you want. Here are two other variations to help you start off with. Follow the same steps as above however change the colours as shown.
